Maria Kofterou （マリア・コフテルー）は、キプロスのニコシアを拠点とするビジュアルアーティストです。アテネ美術学校で絵画の一貫制修士号を、キプロス大学で哲学の学士号を取得し、さらにガラス工芸と陶磁器装飾の訓練を受けた彼女の実践は、ドローイングを通じて自然界を探究する多分野型で、アートとクラフトの境界を横断しています。
イラストレーションと視覚的ストーリーテリングに関心を持ち、紙にインクで描くグラフィックスタイルを発展させながら、風景をテーマにしたシリーズを継続的に制作。青いインクで描かれるドローイングは、風景の〈心理的な色調＝Stimmung〉——観る者の知覚を彩るさまざまな現象の総体——を伝えることを目指しています。
作品には、自然の中で得た体験を結晶化し、二次元イメージのオーラを保存するという考えが込められており、ドローイングの外殻として手工芸ガラスの構造を重ね合わせることで、標本コレクションのような佇まいを生み出しています。
現在、キプロス・ハンディクラフトサービスで陶器の絵付師として勤務し、古代の器を研究しながら、自然と伝統に着想を得た現代的なデザインを制作しています。
さらに、Deltacron crew のメンバーとして、デルタクロン株発見直後に結成されたこの壁画コレクティブと共に、都市の壁に絵を描くことでディストピア的状況をポジティブに転換する活動も行っています。
Maria Kofterou is a visual artist from Nicosia, Cyprus. Having received an integrated Master’s in Painting from the Athens School of Fine Arts, a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from the University of Cyprus, and training in artisanal glass and ceramics decoration, her practice is multidisciplinary, exploring the boundaries between art and craft with a focus on the study of the natural world via drawing.
With an interest in illustration and visual storytelling, she developed a graphic style, drawing with ink on paper which evolved into a series of works on landscapes, an enduring part of her
practice. Her drawings with blue ink aim to communicate the landscape’s psychic tone, [Stimmung] the amalgamation of
phenomena that color the perception of the spectator.
In her practice, there is the notion of crystalization of the experience of being in nature and the preservation of the aura of the two-dimensional image by juxtaposing artisanal glass structures that act as the outer shell of the drawing, resembling specimen collections.
She is currently a painter of ceramics for the Cyprus Handicraft Service where she researches archaic vessels and creates
contemporary designs inspired by nature as well as tradition.
In addition, she is a member of Deltacron crew, a mural collective that was formed just days after the discovery of the
Deltacron strain of the coronavirus, to transform dystopic scenarios into something positive by painting on the walls of the city.
