R.S. Vernは、受賞歴のある猫の書籍三部作「Haee and the Other Middlings」のオーナー兼クリエイターです。本シリーズの第一作『Haee The Cat with a Crooked Tail』は、2013年にInternational IndieReader Discovery Awardを受賞しました。
2012年当時、Vernは本と強い酒の愛好家の狭間で揺れ動き、ほとんどの日々（そして夜）を家で自分の猫との独白に費やしていました。彼女の黒猫Haeeは辛抱強く、たいていの場合、彼女の存在を気にも留めないような様子でした。ある午後、Haeeは実際には別の言語で多くを語っているのではないかとひらめきを得たVernは、Haeeに声を与えてみようと決意し、Haeeの視点から語られる“middlings”の世界を創り始めたのです。
当初は子どもと大人の両方が楽しめる書籍シリーズとして構想されたこの作品ですが、Vernは後にこのシリーズをブランドビジネスへと拡大し、主人公である有名な猫Haeeやほかの“middling”キャラクターたちをモチーフにした商品展開を始めました。“middlings”の世界は、21世紀における中産階級の微妙な心情を意味深く風刺しながら、機能し、生き、呼吸する私たちの現在の姿を、この才気ある猫の目を通して描き出す、楽しい読書体験を提供します。
そして2023年には、このシリーズの続編にあたる詩と散文の作品『Scribbles from the Middling Cat』が刊行されました。
R.S. Vernは、英文学の学士号（B.A. in English Literature）、コミュニケーション学の修士号（M.A. in Communications）、応用ポジティブ心理学のグラデュエートディプロマ（G.D. in Applied Positive Psychology）を取得しています。

2025年3月、R.S. Vernは小説というジャンルで「Haee and the Other Middlings」の物語をさらに構想し、発展させています。日本の田舎の真っただ中で“よそ者”として暮らしながら、彼女はこの土地のコミュニティに根付く、何気ないが味わい深い“middling”な日常を、静かに観察しつつ深い興味を抱いています。品格あるコーヒーショップの店主、不完全さを抱えた寿司職人、何かと謝ってくれる豆腐屋さん、ひたすら慎重な農家、そしてどこか怪しげな近所の猫たち。さらには意外性のある市立図書館や1300年の歴史を持つ温泉で、彼女は興味をそそる物語を見いだしているのです。
R.S. Vernは、高層ビルが立ち並び多くの“middling”たちが暮らすシンガポールの出身です。
R.S. Vern is the owner and creator of the award-winning cat book trilogy, Haee and the Other Middlings. The first installment, Haee The Cat with a Crooked Tail, received the International IndieReader Discovery Award in 2013.
In 2012, Vern hovered between the worlds of literature and strong spirits, spending many days (and nights) conversing with her patient black cat, Haee. Inspired by the idea that Haee might have plenty to say, albeit in a different language, she gave a voice to her feline companion, creating a whimsical world of “middlings” from Haee’s unique perspective.
Initially conceived as a book series for both children and adults, Vern expanded the narrative into a broader brand, launching a line of merchandise featuring the ingenious cat protagonist, Haee, and his fellow middling characters. The charming universe of middlings thoughtfully captures the subtleties and complexities of middle-class life in the 21st century through the eyes of a perceptive and inventive cat.
In 2023, Vern published Scribbles from the Middling Cat, a poetry and prose sequel continuing Haee’s explorations.
R.S. Vern holds a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in Communications, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Positive Psychology.
Currently in residence at Arts Itoya in March 2025, Vern continues to expand Haee’s narrative, drawing inspiration from the charming, everyday experiences of the local community. Observing dignified coffee shop owners, imperfect sushi chefs, apologetic tofu vendors, exceptionally mindful farmers, and even suspicious neighborhood cats, she weaves an engaging story rooted in the enchanting city library and a 1,300-year-old onsen.
